First Chapter Critique

The first chapter is your hook; it sets the tone, your voice, the atmosphere, and so much more.
When sending your book out to be queried or when your work is in the hands of your readers, it is important to make sure that your first chapter will garner the attention it deserves.
I will provide a close read of your first chapter (or the first 10 pages of your manuscript) and provide valuable feedback via in-line edits and a 3-7 page edit letter.
I will examine the opening line, mood, tone, voice, character development, world-building, language level, authorial voice, and more.
Do you want to chat about your first chapter? Add a 1-hour one-on-one component to your booking for just $25. During our meeting, we will chat about your critique, possible next steps, and I can answer any questions you might have!

Critique Mix & Match
First 50 Pages
Perfect for querying and getting your sample pages ready.
$550
A manuscript critique of your first 50 pages (or first 15,000 words), this service includes:
inline comments,
line edits for your first chapter,
a short edit letter,
& an optional 30-minute call to discuss the edit letter & next steps.
Full Manuscript Critique
$1,500*
As both a reader and an editor, I read through your entire manuscript and provide thoughtful, in-depth feedback concerning the big-picture elements of your book. This includes voice, beginnings and endings, believability, character development, consistency, confusion, pacing, plot, plot holes, structure, point of view, themes, etc.
This service amalgamates the most important parts of a developmental edit too. The Manuscript Critique will focus more on story than grammar.
You will receive a thorough edit letter that provides an overview of feedback and suggestions regarding the elements above. The Manuscript Critique also includes a line edit of the first chapter!
After you receive your feedback, we can both sit down for a one-on-one 1-hour Q&A video chat session to go over anything you need.
*flat rate up to 90,000 words. An additional rate of $0.03/word will be added to the additional word count.
A one-on-one chat component is included with your manuscript critique, First 50 Pages, Line Edit, and Developmental Edit service.
We will chat about your critique letter, possible next steps, and I will endeavour to answer any questions you might have!
Manuscript Evaluation
$0.007 USD per word
Evaluating your manuscript, its readiness, and its place in the industry. If need be, we will also discuss story-level ideas to evolve and elevate your work to help sell your book to agents, publishers, or straight to readers. Our discussion largely focuses on current industry trends and how you might use what your manuscript already has to reach a wider audience. (If I spot plot holes or pacing discrepancies, etc., I will of course bring them up in our chat!) A 2-3 page edit letter will be provided as supplemental material. The heart of the evaluation will take place during a 60-90 minute one-on-one chat.
Manuscript Critique versus Manuscript Evaluation
Manuscript Critique
-
Good for agent or publisher R&Rs that require a more in-depth story and line-level analysis, early stages development, final stages before querying, or when you’re receiving multiple passes while querying.
-
In-depth feedback concerning the big-picture elements of your book. This includes voice, tone, beginnings and endings, believability, character development, consistency, confusion, pacing, plot, plot holes, structure, point of view, themes, etc.
-
5-10-page edit/critique letter (critique is based on this letter rather than the supplemental 1:1 chat)
-
30-60-minute one-on-one Q&A chat to supplement the critique letter and any questions you may have.
-
First chapter line edited. No other line edits. If there is a repeating grammar or prose offender, I’ll mention it in your letter.
-

*Up to 90,000 words. An additional fee of $0.03 is added to every word beyond the flat-rate)
Manuscript Evaluation
-
Perfect for when you’re querying and receiving multiple rejections on fulls or partials, or when you’re on submission receiving little to no interest (especially if you do not have an editorial agent).
-
Evaluate your manuscript, its readiness, and its place in the industry. Discussion of story-level ideas to evolve and elevate your work to help “sell” your book to agents and publishers. Our discussion largely focuses on current industry trends and how you might use what your manuscript already has to reach a wider audience. (If I spot plot holes or pacing discrepancies, etc., I will of course bring them up in our chat!)
-
2-3-page evaluation (this is supplemental material)
-
60-90-minute focused chat and editorial discussion about your manuscript and the evaluation.
-
No line edits. If there is a repeating grammar/prose offender, I’ll mention it in your letter or our chat.

(90,000-words = $630 USD)
Large-Scale Edits
-
The Line Edit
$0.045 cents per word
(payment plans accepted)
Editing that focuses on the finer details of writing and language, including the grammar and mechanics. I will also examine the larger elements of your writing style and voice. The Line Edit covers things like
• Genre • Consistency & Continuity • Dialogue • Style, Narration & Voice • Awkward phrasing, Interrupted flow, Wordiness, Moments of confusion, & Repetition • Organization, Structure, & Readability • Spelling, Grammar, & Punctuation • Basic Fact-Checking
Your edits will be edits marked with Track Changes within the manuscript and in-line comments. You will also receive a detailed edit letter—my edit letters can be anywhere from 10-18 pages long!
-
The Developmental Edit
$0.055 cents per word
(payment plans accepted)
Also known as the substantive edit, this is my personal favourite. Examines your writing as a whole—the big picture. Includes structural and some line editing. Specifically, things like
• Revising, reordering, cutting, or expanding material • Clarifying plot, characterization, or thematic elements • Tone, mood, style, language level, & authorial voice • Eliminating jargon, clichés, & euphemisms • Character Development • World Building
I will return your work with in-line comments, edits, and suggestions regarding the big-picture elements of your manuscript. You will also receive an edit letter, which contains detailed feedback, as well as suggestions. My edit letters can be anywhere from 10-18 pages long!
-
The Copy Edit
$0.025 cents per word
(payment plans accepted)
Copyediting is a comprehensive review of a manuscript’s spelling, punctuation, grammar, and overall consistency. Additional queries will be made regarding anachronisms and verifying basic facts (i.e. geography, dates, timeline) as needed. Attention may be paid to notable instances of repetition or awkward phrasing.
All edits will be marked with Track Changes within the manuscript, with queries appearing as in-line comments. You will also receive an edit letter and a style sheet (if you already have a style sheet, we will happily work with it).
Please note: This service is based on polishing text and grammar rather than plot or character or world-building. Therefore, this is not a substitute for developmental editing.
Exclusively provided by Evan Yeong.
-
The Proofread
$0.019 cents per word
(payment plans accepted)
Proofreading is typically the final review a manuscript undergoes and focuses on catching whatever managed to fall through the cracks, i.e., typos, comma splices and other punctuation issues, et cetera. This is the most “hands-off” look, prioritizing a clean, error-free read in preparation for putting your work out into the world.
All edits will be marked with Track Changes within the manuscript, with queries appearing as in-line comments.
Please note: We only proofread professionally copy-edited manuscripts. Also, due to the high-level view of this style of edit, this service is not a substitute for copy editing or line editing.
Exclusively provided by Evan Yeong.
